I teach a diverse group of Kindergartners at a charter school which focuses on integrating community service and civic literacy into the curriculum, while reinforcing our reading, writing, and math.

Within our school, we are consistently looking for ways to record student learning, and ensure that the students reflect on their learning. This coming year, I will have the students help to choose work from their reading, writing, math, service projects, science, or social studies, that is representative of the growth that they make each month. By the end of the year, each student will have a binder with three to four samples of work from each month, that they will be able to share with their families and our community at our Showcase of Learning, a school wide where students celebrate their learning. Then students will be able to take their portfolios home as a remembrance of their year in kindergarten.

In my experience, students who are constantly reflecting on their learning are incredibly proud of what they have achieved. In order to compile these portfolios, each student will need a binder and page protectors. These resources will allow me to put together binders, so that, at the end of each month, we will be able to celebrate our accomplishments and add new work to our binders.

Your generous donation will allow my students to have a record of their growth in kindergarten. Each student will have an opportunity to celebrate his/her work each month by choosing the work that he/she is most proud of. At the end of this past year, I asked my students what they were proud of accomplishing, and the answers varied from doing math to reading chapter books and helping to make recycling bins for the school. These portfolios will allow the students to keep a record of these accomplishments and help reduce their frustration when they feel they are not learning. Thank you for helping to encourage my students' reflection and pride in their work.
