Kindergarten Listening Station

My students need a listening center for one of our literacy stations.

My Students

Help! Our makeshift Kindergarten listening station is falling apart! Our headphones are broken and there is no way to neatly organize materials. The kids LOVE this station, but it's hard when nothing works anymore and things are held together by tape.

We are a class of 21 inquisitive and lovable Kindergarteners in Kansas City.

The school we attend is extremely diverse in SES, race, ethnicity, and home-life situations. Our school is a Title I school, as well as an ESOL and LIFT (autism) center school. Our teachers are dedicated, hardworking, and passionate people who give everything to make each student's day better than the one before. My goal each day is to let my kids know that they are special, smart, and loved.

My Project

With this listening station, students will be able to listening to books on CD while improving their listening, comprehension, fluency, and concepts of print skills. More importantly, kids who are never read to at home will be able to enjoy listening to a good book and develop a love of reading.

"Simply providing access is the first and most important step in encouraging literacy development," states Stephen Krashen, education professor at USC and literacy activist.

Access to books is key in bridging the ever growing gap between affluent and lower SES schools. One simple step towards this goal is exposing children to a variety of literature through our classroom literacy station. A love of reading can be a vital tool for success as students grow and learn in school.
