My Students

It seemed like a miracle that we received a new printer/copier for our classroom--until it became apparent that there was no money in the budget to supply toner once it runs out.

We are a class of 24, diverse, kindergarten students.

Our class has a wide mix of ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds, and academic abilities. Many of the students have learning disabilities, speech and hearing impairments. Our school does not use textbooks but use creative and innovative ways to address the needs of our students as well as the curriculum.

My Project

The printer/copier allows us to do many creative and innovative things that promote community building and learning. In general, the students engage in learning activities that involve games, poems, and books which are mostly printed from electronic resources. The students that need visual schedules and behavior management plans use printed behavior plans, personalized with photos, and icons to help them through transitions and to manage their own behavior. Since the kids are so young, we use the pictures and names of the students to learn a lot of literacy skills. Often, we will photocopy student work to share with family members or to make student-created books, signs and fliers. These invitations to write and share their work are very motivating and meaningful. Parent newsletters and notes are a breeze---as is accurate record keeping when notes home are copied.

You might think that surely the school budget or the PTA budget would pay for this toner.

There must be copiers we have access to, right? The principal and the PTA have stretched their budget so far and there just is no more money for toner or ink for printers. There is a shared copier, but it cannot print out computer files. With your help, this printer will not collect dust, but will keep on helping me create great learning experiences for the children!
