Mr. Huben from Aberdeen MS is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need kidney specimens, 3D molecular models, distillation apparatuses, and a dissecting microscope.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 102 eleventh and twelfth grade students. My students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have been denied access to so many educational opportunities. I am extremely happy to learn about Donors Choose. My goal is to help my students experience the joy of hands-on science activities!
My students are fantastic!
Both energetic and passionate, they have a strong desire for learning and for exploration. They would be ecstatic to have the opportunity to work with and learn from hands-on science experiments and activities! I would describe my school as severely underfunded and underprivileged. Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They are such great kids and deserve all the help and kindness that we can provide for them. They will be truly grateful for the opportunity to build 3D models, to conduct a dissection, and to run their own scientific experiment looking at the pollution of local streams and lakes.
My students will use the materials to generate 3D models of organic models to better learn and visual the spatial arrangements of compounds. In addition, they will use the materials to understand how the human kidney uses principles of chemistry to remove waste and extra water from the circulatory system. Furthermore, the materials will be used to measure the amount of residual solids in local streams and lakes as a surrogate measure of water pollution.
Due to past difficulties, our school has had neither a functioning science lab or a certified chemistry teacher for several years.
As a result, my students, who are juniors and seniors, have never been in a science lab. I am a first year certified chemistry and biology teacher. My goal is to use these materials to provide our students with a great introduction to science. I want them to have fun learning science through hands-on experiences!
