Keeping Students Hooked on Books with Popular Sequels
My students need 30 up-to-date sequels for their favorite series so that they will continue to read. This hooks them on reading and turns them into lifelong readers!
I'm trying to turn my students into addicts. Book addicts. Remember when you were a kid and you had to know what happened next, so you HAD to read on? That is what I want to see in my kids. Middle school is a crucial time when students can fall away from reading, but with the right books they won't!
My students are a mixture of seventh and eighth graders who often come from high achieving households, and are pushed even harder by their teachers.
They are pressed to read, and many of them come to the library every day. They are always looking for something new, and it is a stretch for our budget to keep up with them. There are no bookstores or libraries (except ours!) on this side of town, so they turn to us for their reading needs. They know when the latest popular books are coming out, but they have no way to get them unless we provide them. Consequently they show up in the library the day after a book is released wanting to check it out. It is hard keeping up with these ambitious students!
My Project
All the books requested for this project were released this summer and fall. They are the latest sequels in popular series that our students zealously follow, or they are a new book by one of their favorite authors. Students have been asking us for these books for weeks, and will snatch them up as soon as they arrive. Providing new and popular books creates excitement in the library so that students come by frequently to see what the new arrivals are. They also browse the shelves to see what else is here and frequently find other gems. Having new arrivals draws students in and gives them more opportunities to read and develop their love for reading!
When students know that the library is up to date, they are more likely to see it as relevant to their lives, and to use it for any reason, whether for recreational reading or for school research.
