Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember when you needed to go to the library or drag out an encyclopedia to look up a quick fact? While some of my students have computers at home, I have many students who don't and who are at a major disadvantage when given online research assignments for homework.

Working in the poorest congressional district in the country, my students come in at a wide range of academic levels.

They are enthusiastic and hard working, but many have large gaps in knowledge, number sense and/or basic math skills. As a teacher I make every effort to give them as many opportunities to extend their work to higher levels and to raise the bar on their own personal expectations. They are welcome in my class for extra help or just a quiet place to work during any free periods of the day. A computer would be an incredible resource for my self-motivated students who often take advantage of this opportunity. I also strive to provide extra support for students struggling with basic skills and extra enrichment for students who are ready to take their work to the next level. We have individualized math program that students can use and a laptop would greatly supplement it because it would allow them to use online resources and videos when they need help on a topic.

My Project

We need a small laptop that is accessible to small groups of students at all times. My students will be able to use it for Internet research and homework before and after school and at lunch. They will also be able to use it to access math resources like Khan Academy and other academic websites. This will help put all my students on a level playing field. In addition, the computer will be used for group projects, visual modeling of complicated math topics, and for online math enrichment activities for students who finish their work early.

In today's world, a computer for classroom use is not a privilege, it is a necessity.

Please my students compete with their peers and help me provide more individualized opportunities for my students in class!
