My Students

In my Japanese literature classes, we do so much more than just read books. We explore theater, film, cultural traditions and more, always keeping in mind the students' own diverse interests. To support this, we need access to a variety of Japanese cultural texts, drama and film.

Our students are scholars who challenge themselves and take their studies seriously.

This is a New York City public school full of rich cultural diversity, talent, ambition, creativity, and unique people who march to the beat of their own drums. I want to encourage and support my students' pursuit of knowledge, independent curiosity and love of literature and drama.

My Project

My Japanese literature classes explore a wide variety of writing that spans the ages. Tenth-century courtesan Sei Shonagon's "Pillow Book" gives readers an insider's view of noble life, as well as beautiful details like the blink of a firefly or the color of a mountain at sunset. The works of modern authors such as Banana Yoshimoto and Haruki Murakami will be enjoyed by students both in class and for pleasure reading. We also delve into the sources of Japanese cultural traditions and classical and modern drama, and we look forward to poring over the dramatic costume photography in "The Secrets of Noh Masks" and learning about Bunraku puppet theater in "The Major Plays of Chikamatsu." Interpreting influential Japanese films, including the works of Akira Kurosawa, is a part of my classes as well. Studying these works will give students a broader global perspective. It also challenges their cultural and visual literacy and critical thinking skills.
