"Open up to page 13." Who want to hear that in science class?...not my students. My students like to get their hands on the concepts.
My 4th graders are tactile learners.
Test scores have shown that when multiple labs are included in a unit, their test scores rise. With technology at many of my students fingertips, actually "doing" science is usually a new experience. They love tending to the gardens that we are in charge of around school and are very proud of the results.
My Project
Owl pellet dissection has always been a big hit with my students. With reactions from "oh gross, I'm not touching that...it smells" (which it really doesn't) to "can I take this home when we are done?" in the end they all enjoyed the food chain discovery involved. I want all the 4th graders at my school to experience this lab. I am asking for enough pellets that the students can work in pairs to dissect. I am also included larger size pellets. It will be interesting to see the difference in the types of bones that are uncovered.
Students still come back to me and say that the owl pellet dissection lab was one of their favorites..to which I say.."Wait until you get into high school for some real dissection fun!" I think instilling the love of science in both boys and girls at a young age is so critical to their self esteem when it comes to this challenging subject.
