Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a very diverse school. We are in a high-need community, Title 1, and QEIA school. The majority of my students are living below poverty and more than 90% are ESL/ELL students. I also have several classes of students which are functioning above grade level and need a greater challenge.

My students have big dreams and I want to help them see these as a reality. They need to see that saving money and shopping smart go hand in hand. Hopefully they can help their families increase their living situation through the concept of saving for the future. Our math supplies are limited and we are in need of math manipulatives and games for the rainy days and small group activities.

I am looking for games, manipulatives, and centers which will increase student interest and make saving money fun as well as educational. By using a variety of formats, students can pair up and use the resource which will match their ability and number sense. I also hope to use these tools to increase the interest and desire to learn by the lower functioning students.

As a first-year teacher, my own finances are limited. But I want to provide my students every opportunity to find math fun, especially the life skills that so many lack. Through your support, my students will increase their number sense, math skills, and understanding of saving money for a rainy day. These kits will reach all levels of ability while also allowing them to explore and play while they learn.
