“...technology alone is not enough - it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our heart sing” -Steve Jobs
It is my goal to have an entire class set of iPads for use in all of my Art I, Art II and Digital Art classes.
We are a middle school serving approximately 950 students residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Our school mirrors the diversity of our district and California with 43% white, 35% Hispanic, 6% Black, 5% Asian, 4% Filipino, 1% two or more races and 1% Pacific Islander. 45% of our students are English proficient and 37% receive free and reduced lunch. The visual arts program is 100% funded through parent donations many families are not in a position to donate.
My Project
As an art teacher in the 21st century. I would like to have access to pads on a daily basis. Students are required to research design concepts, art history, culture content and social issues. Programs such as movie maker and GarageBand are unique to the iPads. Currently Digital art students are working on an animated feature that portrays Joseph Campbell's hero cycle in conjunction with 7th grade English curriculum. Students are working in groups of two but eventually I would like students to have the opportunity to work individually. Art II students are researching an artist for their current project and going to create a slide presentation and teach the class about the artist and his/her role in art history.
Our school’s mission is to have students career ready and college bound.
21st century skills include using technology ethically for language arts, math, science and design. At my middle school I piloted Digital Art; all assignments are cross curricular and many have collaboration with other departments relating current lessons to our projects. It is my goal to have an entire class set of iPads for use in all of my Art classes.
