My students need hurling helmets, sliotars, Gaelic footballs, and hurlers in order to participate in the Gaelic athletic sports of hurling and Gaelic football.
At the end of the year, I want my students to have a better understanding and appreciation for the different sports being playing around the world. The biggest challenge is getting enough equipment to perform and participate in these new sports.
My students are inner city youths who have an incredible appetite to learn and succeed.
Despite coming from high poverty, my students have an outstanding academic achievement level and that drive comes from their character and determination to succeed and explore. As an International Baccalaureate High School, we try to teach the students to be holistic learners and to have international mindedness. In my physical education classes, I teach the students different sports and activities that are played throughout the world. I believe the students gain an appreciation and respect for the different cultures by playing their sports. I also believe this participation fuels my students desire to explore these countries and to learn more about them.
My Project
With the purchase of the helmets and equipment, my students will be able to participate in Ireland's two pastimes of Gaelic Football and Hurling. Hurling is a sport that requires safety so the helmets are instrumental for the safety of my students.
By playing these sports not only will the students have to learn the history, origin, and rules, but they will have to immerse themselves in the Irish cultures. I have also requested enough equipment so all of my students can enjoy these wonderful games without having to 'wait their turn'. This is important for any new sport being introduced as the students will be engaged and entertained. The helmets can also be used for lacrosse and floor hockey game play.
Many of my students have never left their cities for various reasons.
I feel that exposing the students to different sports from around the world it will help their curiosity to explore the world. I feel this will give my students a holistic and international mindedness that is needed. My classroom will improve immensely by offering a variety of actives the students can participate in. Starting new sports will put all students on a level playing field and participation will increase.
