This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever experienced stage fright? My students experience it a lot in my classroom when they are asked to speak in French. Recording themselves is the perfect solution to alleviate that stage fright!
I work with a very diverse group of students in one of the biggest cities in the United States and every day is an adventure in my classroom.
Our school has 3,500 students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds and approximately 50% of our school is economically disadvantaged. I teach six periods a day, five French 1 classes and one French 2 class that range from 27-30 students. My students amaze me every day when I hear what they go through outside of school and yet they still have the motivation to come and learn. Teaching my students a foreign language and giving them an escape into a new culture is something that I feel blessed to be doing each day.
My Project
The main way my students will be using these iPods is to record themselves speaking French for numerous projects they work on throughout the year. Most of my students get extremely nervous speaking in front of the class in English, and even more so when I ask them to do it in French. Having the ability to record themselves will reduce that stress while still giving them a platform to show myself and others what they know. Outside of recording, these iPods will also give them access to numerous language learning apps such as How to Pronounce and WordReference. There are also learning games we play in class using cell phones such as Kahoot which many of my students aren't able to play when they don't have a phone.
Many of my students are economically disadvantaged which typically means they do not have access to a phone with Internet capabilities.
Having these iPods will provide my students who may not be able to afford the newest technology the chance to learn using these apps and games.
