Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How often do you listen to music? Weekly, hourly? How do you feel when you listen to the music? Does it help you focus, calm down, relax? For me, music is an excellent enforcer to get things accomplished, or help wind down. Please help my students experience these same feelings with the iPod shuffles.
I am a special education teacher for students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
I teach in an adaptive learning environment. I have a diverse population of students with low cognitive abilities. Some students have autism, others have intellectual disabilities. We have several students that are nonverbal and enjoy listening to music and auditory books.
My Project
My students would benefit from the iPod shuffles in several ways. During our transition times with their general education peers, it can become very loud, stressful and hectic for our students. Having an iPod shuffle to help calm them and keep them focused during transition will help reduce their stress levels. My students also enjoy listening to music during their free time and we use music as a means to teach. Having the iPods would reinforce topics and information they need to know. Lastly, my students use different senses in different ways. Giving them the opportunity to use the sense of sound to learn is just as beneficial as using the iPad, computer or smartboard to help them learn in visual ways.
Donations given to this project will greatly impact the outcome of my students' daily activities.
The music placed on the iPod Shuffles can help calm the students during stressful times of the day. It can give them a sensory output. It will also give them the opportunity for another learning modality that will increase their desire to learn and help them learn the material more efficiently.
