Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Last year, the average 12th grader scored a 48% on the annual JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy test. My students are only in the 5th grade, but from those statistics, now would be the perfect time to start teaching them about financial literacy.

My students come from a high poverty neighborhood with a very diverse range of home structures: nuclear, single parent, multiple-family, foster, migrant, and military to name a few.

Many of my students come to me at least 1 - 3 years below grade level in reading and/or math. My students love to be at school and enjoy learning, especially when the activities are hands-on. The more interactive they can be, the more interested they are in learning.

My Project

Teaching students financial skills now, can help them spend wisely, save more and make good financial choices in the future. There are many websites, such as TimeforKids and PBS kids, that offer games for children that teach them about financial literacy. As technology grows, so do the ways we can learn about finance and economics. There are various iPod applications that teach students about money management: Bank of Mom, Allowance: your Pocket Money, P2K Money, and Kids Money. I want to use the websites as well as the iPod applications to teach my students about financial literacy. This is an innovative, hands-on way to teach my students how to manage their money. This is a life skill that is necessary in life and that can grow as they grow.

Teaching children about money management is crucial for helping them grow up successfully!

Do we really want the children of today to be in the same financial bind that adults are in today? I don't think so!
