IPads For Independent Learning

My students need an iPad 2 with case to continue learning at their own pace.

My Students

21st Century learners in a 20th century classroom can create a real problem. Help our students in our quest to create a 1:1 classroom using iPads and iPod touches to differentiation learning and instruction. My students need an iPad 2 with case to continue learning at their own pace.

The students in my classroom are very fresh!

They come from a small town with a high rate of poverty. Over 50% of our students qualify for free-reduced lunch. Although this statistic is daunting, don't let it sadden you. These students are thriving with curiosity and drive. They want nothing more than to create, learn, and explore. They love the access they currently have to iPod nanos to listen to reading and the Mac Mini computer we have to access the Internet, use the photo booth, and play with Sifteo cubes. We recently raised money for an iPod touch, but their appetite is only growing bigger. Students need access to technology, and in our corner of the world, that is not a given in their households. The classroom provides an opportunity for these students to learn about the devices and programs that they will be expected to know about and use later in their lives. It also fosters independence in their own learning and allows them to work independently to review or go ahead

My Project

An iPad allows students to access applications to assist them in their learning. From multiplication to photography, an iPad provides students access to everything they need to let their creativity flow. They love to read books on e-readers, listen to books, create demonstrative videos, and take pictures during science lessons. This device would allow more of my students to have a chance to learn and explore using technology, instead of waiting for a volunteer to read with them or to sketch pictures of their observations. Students are also motivated to use technology with their work. This chance often provides students without intrinsic motivation the extra push to complete work and perhaps learn content with the iPad through a new media.

This project is so important because these kids are worth it.

Many of these students will never have the chance to independently explore web apps, games, videos, cameras, and other expensive technologies that may ignite a passion and/or support their needs. This classroom is a special place that allows kids to do things that aren't available to them in their outside lives. The excitement the kids have knowing that we have the devices AND they are for them is priceless.
