Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine you can't speak. What would your life be like if you had something to say but didn't have the ability to communicate it? What if you could unlock the door to communication with technology?
Please consider unlocking the door to communication for my students. Give the gift of language!
Our project is called iPads for Autism, but my students have a variety of unique needs including autism, downs syndrome, and other significant communication delays.
They also have big hearts, active minds, and a strong desire to share what they know with the world.
My students are a fun, happy, energetic bunch of 3-5 year olds who can't wait to communicate with the world. They attend preschool 5-days a week at an early childhood center of 14 classes designed to meet their unique needs. In my classroom, I currently have 8 students in the morning session, and 6 students in the afternoon session. My classes will continue to grow as the year continues.
For most of my students, communication and language development are there biggest challenges. I am eager to explore ways to use technology to support their ability to communicate.
My Project
Trying to describe the impact these resources will have on my students is almost impossible. How much of an impact will the ability to communicate have on my students? It's indescribable. Language is our most powerful tool, and the iPad will be another potential mode of communication for my students.
We will use the iPad throughout our day to help students communicate. Since we are just starting out with one iPad, it will be a group tool used at small group, large group, snack, work time, in therapy, and throughout our day to help students be able to express their wants and needs. The TouchChat app I intend to purchase allows students to communicate with the push of a button, but also allows for them to create complex sentences. Additionally, we will purchase apps that help students learn vocabulary, letters, and other academic skills. I truly believe that having the iPad in the classroom will help students show us what they know!
Rosemary Crossley said, "Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say." My students have something to say.
An iPad for our classroom could make communication possible for my students. Please consider giving the gift of language!
