My Students

Imagine you are five years old, you've never been to school before, and above everything else, you don't know a word of English.

That feeling you have in your gut is the exact feeling that all of my students felt on the first day of school. I teach 15 determined, loving, and extraordinary ESL (English as a Second Language) students in our self-contained classroom. I'm responsible for 21 ESL students total. Each and every one of these families came to the United States to acquire the education that they deserve. Seeing their desire and eagerness for knowledge makes me the happiest teacher in the world. We are a Title I school so our students are very low income. A lot of my students don't even have crayons to use at home, which is very discouraging. Yet when they come to school, they enter our classroom with big hugs and huge smiles on their faces.

My Project

The way a person acquires language is through hearing a word, seeing a word, and saying a word. My students will be able to use the iPad Minis to help them improve their language through the manipulation of sounds and visuals. In ELA, the iPad Minis will allow my students help in letter and sound recognition, identifying sight words, and aiding them in the beginning stages of how to read. In math, the iPad Minis will provide visual manipulatives, number recognition, as well as adding and subtracting in an interactive manner. With 15 students, it's a challenge teaching to 15 different levels. Each of my students needs individualized education. I can have personalized folders for each of my students, which will help build strengths and improve weaknesses based on their knowledge base, or personalized learning. Having the iPad Minis will allow me to download educational applications to go into each student's folder. With customized materials this will help students progress quicker.

My students will want to strive to show their understanding of language through the use of the iPad Minis.

A majority of my students do not have access to an electronic device at home. Being able to use the iPads will help my students to think and be more independent learners. They will be able to take ownership of their learning and teach others what they've learned.
