Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students crave using technology in the classroom. If I ask a regular question, only the brave raise their hands. The moment I ask a question involving interacting with the SmartBoard, the brave, shy, short, tall all raise hands! I want ALL students interacting with technology every day!
My school is in a low-income area with a high ESOL population.
I specifically teach English to students, who are level 2-4 ESOL level. This demographic information does not do my students justice though!
My students are brave. Many of them don't realize how far they've come: understanding no English 2 years ago, and being able to carry on a conversation and crack jokes with myself and their peers. My students are nothing short of inspiring, and I don't want to short my students any educational experience, for they deserve everything.
At our school, we have limited access to technology. In our classroom, we have the teacher's computer and a SmartBoard. While this is great for delivering instruction, it does not engage all of my students in learning with technology. Most of my students do not have cell phones, but being able to teach them how to collaborate with and responsibly use an iPad with a group of students would be extremely beneficial!
My Project
My students need two iPad minis with protection plans for our classroom. Instead of having to give instruction at each station in our rotation, I can set up an iPad at two stations to give instructions and activities to my students, while I deliver differentiated, personalized instruction at another station.
My students apply for "jobs" at the beginning of each year and are responsible for a different aspect of keeping our classroom on track throughout the year. I would love to be able to keep a check in app for my students on the iPad, so they can evaluate their job performance.
Many times, students create disposable projects, which then are thrown out or recycled. With iPads, we can capture these projects on camera. We can take pictures of our notes. We can record lessons and create videos. Many of my students are visual learners, and having access to online pictures and videos will be priceless when reviewing! It will be extremely helpful to have quick access to student model examples, and annotate for the class!
I try to make every space useful in my classroom.
We write on windows. Our bulletin boards house yearlong activities, calendars, and projects. Our marker boards are sectioned off to include weekly 'Minute to Win It' challenges, daily agendas and Learning Targets, and Word Wall Vocabulary. Even the "teacher wardrobe" has been transformed into a One Stop Shop for classroom supplies. I want to help my students gain responsibility, independence, and creativity; we can do this together with technology!
