Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Education is evolving due to the impact of the Internet. We cannot teach our students in the same manner in which we were taught. Change is necessary to engage students not in the curriculum we are responsible for teaching, but in school. Period." -April Chamberlain
I work with 19 third grade students at a Title 1 elementary school in Houston, Texas.
Our PK-4th grade school services over 800 students. Over half of our students are limited English proficient and over 80% of our students are considered economically disadvantaged.
Last year, I taught my same group of students in second grade. Now, as the new school year begins and my students enter our new room as third graders, I can see that in teaching my same students for the second year in a row, I've become hugely invested in them and their academic success. Knowing my students well, I know they are enthralled by the integration of technology into our classroom. While my school district has done a phenomenal job of providing resources for our students, there is simply not enough technology in my classroom to go around. My students are bright and spirited, and they deserve resources and materials that will engage and motivate them to reach their full potential.
My Project
The 3 requested iPad minis with protective cases will be used in a variety of ways throughout the school day. They will primarily be used during our literacy and math work station rotations, in which students work independently or in small groups to apply skills we are learning in our classroom. During reading, audiobooks can increase struggling readers' interest in reading, and will help all students to become more fluent readers. QR code readers will allow students to check their work during learning games and activities and monitor their own understanding. Educational apps to review key concepts will also be integrated into these times. These apps provide sounds and visuals that will help students who learn in different ways, as well as provide support for English language learners. The progress monitoring capabilities of these apps will also allow me to observe students' performance, and to recognize students' strengths and strengthen students' weaknesses.
The impact these iPad minis would have on our classroom would be substantial.
Student engagement in literacy and math work stations would increase, and with increased engagement comes increased opportunities for the learning of essential skills and information. Sharing these tools would provide opportunities for student collaboration and the building of interpersonal skills. Finally, these opportunities to use new technologies will help my students develop increasingly important technological skills.
