Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When our Band was invited to perform in Washington DC I thought, no way we can raise this kind of money. I told my students about it and my leadership team took over! They started researching fundraisers and discovered the donors choose would allow THEM to post a project! Work started immediately!
My students knew that we wouldn't be able to raise these funds alone so their thought was why not reach out to the community we support every day and ask for some help in return! We are the only middle school from Texas invited to participate so the students were VERY excited to represent not only our band and school, but our community here in East Dallas. They came to me after doing some research and asked if I would allow them to post a donors choose project to help fund our trip to Washington DC and I thought, well of course!! We've had a lot of success with donors choose in the past so they were excited to utilize it again!!
This trip will teach my students numerous skills that will help them long after they leave high school! A trip of this magnitude requires a ton of organizational skills and my leadership team is at the forefront helping me plan every detail, even down to dinner reservations and activities in between performances. They also know they will have to perform at their absolute best to represent our school and community well which requires a ton of focus, determination, dedication, and teamwork. They will be held to the highest standards in regards to their behavior and performance so all of the students are aware they need to be on their A-Game to make a trip like this successful! They will also be touring many museums and historical sites while we are in Washington DC so they can get a trip full of history, team work, the Arts, and fun with friends. This will help bond them together as a team which will help with all competitions later in the year!
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to raise funds so that all the students in the Symphonic Band can attend a performance in Washington DC. Our Symphonic Band hopes to travel to Washington DC to perform at the Veteran's Day Ceremony and Parade. The trip from Dallas, TX to Washington DC is very expensive for 80 members so we need help in raising the funds for this amazing opportunity to present our program to people who have served our amazing country well.
With this trip, there will be so many opportunities to show our leadership skills especially since we would be visiting the heart of America. The whole city is about liberty and justice for our citizens and we could learn a lot about leadership from our country's great leaders. Fundraising and helping out our teacher organize this trip will help develop our leadership skills and will build character and a strong bond between band members through the power of music and teamwork.
Going to Washington DC would be an excellent opportunity for us as a band. Since our school is an International Baccalaureate school, we receive international centered instruction and a trip to our nations capitol would be a great learning experience for our schooling but also for us as people. There's an interesting history to the city and a lot of different cultures to learn about. We appreciate this chance to learn about our nations history and perform for our nations heroes!
