Investigating Ladybug Life Cycles

My students need ladybug specimen, habitats where they can live, and aphids for them to eat. We also need pea seeds that will grow into food for the aphids.

My Students

My first grade classroom is a place for scientific exploration, observations and discovery. Children learn by doing, and then write and draw what they see in their science notebooks. By the end of this school year, I want the students to have had multiple opportunities to investigate key concepts.

My students are a diverse group of learners, who represent a broad range of cultural and educational backgrounds.

At our school, approximately one-third of our population speaks English as a second language, and we have students from all over the world as part of our scholastic community.

My Project

These ladybugs would be an incredible enhancement to our study of the life cycles and behavior of insects and help us answer the question, "How are insect life cycles the same and different from one another?" The students would be able to observe the ladybugs undergo metamorphosis, and emerge as familiar adults. They would then be able to feed them aphids as part of their understanding of the interconnectedness of the natural world. We study butterflies and meal worms as part of our curriculum, and the ladybugs would provide an important point of comparison to them.

This project will give the students the opportunity to further enhance their understandings of life cycles and insects' behavior.

In conjunction with that, they will be able to see by raising the pea plants and aphids the importance of all living things. This would be an incredible project that would greatly enhance our existing insect unit. The students would truly be "Smarter,Together" by observing, documenting, and sharing what they've discovered.
