Investigating Fractions and Other Math Concepts

My students need Cuisenaire Rods to help them understand fractions and problem solving.

My Students

Were you ever told, "Yours is not to question why, just invert and multiply," as you were learning to divide fractions? Students in my class are required to question why whenever they learn new math concepts. Sometimes to learn why, students need to be able to explore a concept visually.

Students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds.

Some students are learning English as their second language. Others are overcoming unstable home situations, health issues, and poverty. Despite the challenges that individual students face daily, they each come to school willing to work hard. They set goals for themselves and work hard to achieve them. Together the class celebrates their successes. The school is surrounded by farmland and has about 325 students. With the school being small, it is a close community with staff and students knowing each other by name.

My Project

Cuisenaire Rods are a fantastic tool for students to use to understand fractions. Using these math tools, they are able to gain a lasting understanding of how to add, subtract, multiply, divide and convert fractions. These rods are based on a centimeter unit of measurement, which is the size of the smallest rod. Each rod increases by one centimeter up to 10 centimeters and is represented by a different color. Students will be able to take a problem such as 1/2 + 7/8 and visually see why you add fractions using common denominators. Fractions, a concept usually difficult for students to understand, can make so much more sense with Cuisenaire Rods.

Math is often a difficult subject for many students.

To increase the math achievement of students, it is important for students to understand what they are learning. A deeper understanding will allow students to apply their knowledge in new situations and carry that knowledge into their futures. Tools such as Cuisenaire Rods will benefit many students in gaining that understanding.
