Interactive iReaders Invade the Library

My students need materials to support a recent iPad purchase. We're asking for an Apple TV receiver with an HDMI cable to mirror and project lessons and 12 rugged iPad covers for little users.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The library is the reading hub of the school. I want to inspire students to read because they LOVE it, not because they must. Research shows that if students aren't reading on grade level by the end of third grade, they can struggle for the duration of school. Technology helps bring books to life.

In a typical day within our school library, I can see upwards of 150 students ranging from pre-K to fifth grade.

Students may be visiting on their own to change a book, coming to hear a story, do research, or visiting with their class for books or a special lesson. Our school is located in one of the largest urban school districts in the country. Most of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and cannot afford the "luxury" of actually buying books. Our library is a great equalizer in that all students have access to high-interest, popular books.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will support the iPads I was able to secure from a business grant in addition to library fundraising dollars. We know that young children are a bit rougher on portable electronics than the average user. I envision using the rugged iPad cases to set young readers free to explore e-books and other interactive reading apps on the iPads. We are designing a school and community garden this year. With the addition of the protective cases, students will be able to also utilize the iPads in the outdoor learning space. The Apple TV receiver and HDMI cable will allow me to mirror what is on the teacher/librarian device as I teach and model lessons on the iPad. The device can also stand in place of an expensive white board or document camera.

Donations from you will make a difference!

My students will have the tools to be interactive with books using technology that they may not have otherwise experienced. When students are engaged, they learn in a deeper, more authentic way. I want my students to be life long readers. I also want them to experience the benefits that technology can bring them. I want them to be ready for a 21st Century world.
