My Students

Help us learn the concepts of modern physics while also incorporating reading and writing into our physics course.

My students attend an urban, public school in North Carolina with a large percentage of students eligible for free and reduced lunch.

The population is mixed demographically with half of the population of Latin American and African-American decent. The students have a passion for learning, but the district lacks the funds to keep up with this passion.

My Project

The resources requested, 28 copies of "A Brief History of Time",will be part of a project in physics. The project consists of having the students keep a journal of what they read in the book, along with follow up lessons and activities in class. The project will benefit the students a great deal by allowing them to tune up their reading and writing abilities, while also giving them a conceptual understanding of the more modern topics in physics. These modern ideas, like quantum mechanics, surround them every day in computers, iPods, and other electronic devices. These ideas will play a bigger and bigger role in the future as technology improves, and a general knowledge of the concepts will go a long way in preparing these students for the future. The books will also allow the students to assimilate these advanced topics with the topics in Newtonian physics. The journaling will expose the interests of the students to me, which will allow me to make more student-centered lessons.

Literacy is possibly the most important part of education, no matter what field a student is planning on entering after school.

Your donation will help fund a project that will improve the literacy skills of students for many years in a course that is not typically associated with literacy.
