Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at Harding Elementary School need your help to become composers! My students have the desire to express themselves through music. However, we are currently very limited in the sounds we can use because we don't have a variety of classroom instruments.
The students of Harding are eager to learn and curious about everything.
However, many come from homes that lack basic resources. With these instruments, we will be able to explore how we can express ourselves through music.
Students in groups will be able to work together to tell stories through the different sounds of the instruments. Students will discover their own voices through composing with the instruments. It empowers them and gives them a sense that their ideas matter.
My Project
"Ping" of the finger cymbals, "boom... boom boom" of the frame drum, "scratch scratch... scratch" of the guiro. These are just some of the sounds we will be able to use with these instruments.
I teach music to all of the students at Harding Elementary School! This set of instruments will be used with all classes, from kindergarten through sixth grade. In the lower grades, we use the instruments to compose, explore how instruments make sound, improvise, and play ostinati (repeating patterns) to accompany songs. For example, a kindergarten class can explore the book "I See a Song" by Eric Carle, by composing sounds accompaniment to go with the pictures. In the upper grades, we will use the instruments to add color and interest to our compositions on violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone.
Currently we only have shakers, and the students are not able to truly compose with the full spectrum of sounds.
Please help us be able to express ourselves and write our own music!
