My Students

Can you imagine having music class without instruments? Our school is only two years old and we have very few instruments for the students to play during class.

Our school is in the inner city in a high poverty area.

80% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our student body is made up of 43% African-American, 15% Hispanic, 10% Asian, and 32% white students. They love music and love to sing and play instruments. My room is full of students any time I am not teaching because the students want to spend their free time listening to music and singing and dancing. They love the instruments we do have and want to play them all the time. My older students often come in to my younger classes to help the younger students. They enjoy teaching others what they have learned.

My Project

I am asking for Orff instruments and music so that my students can play musical arrangements on the instruments in class and in concerts. Orff instruments are xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels. We already have two metallophones and one xylophone in the our school and the supplies I have requested would make a set that we would be able to play Orff arrangements on. Students in grades K through 6 will be using the instruments at varying levels of difficulty during the year.

Playing music on instruments helps students to internalize the fundamentals of music they are taught in class and transfer them into performance.

The hands on experience provided by playing instruments is unparalleled in effectiveness for bringing music concepts like music reading and musicianship to life for students.
