My students need to be able to access high-interest articles in order to supplement our school's Inquiry-based Learning Curriculum and encourage independent reading!

My Students

Our school subscribes to the Toledo Blade newspaper. Any teacher or student may grab a copy and bring it to our classrooms, but we thirst for variety and something more engaging!

Our high school student population is 98.5% African American,one third have special education needs, and the majority of our students are reading at a fourth grade level.

Our students are making progress everyday, but I am striving to foster their independent reading spirits by encouraging them to work with magazine articles.

My Project

We are working very hard to increase our Reading comprehension and reading fluency in every grade level at our school. The scholastic magazines and resources we have requested will allow us to engage students with subjects they are interested in! I have requested enough materials that each of the three Language Arts teachers may have a set in each English classroom.

A community advocate said that a whole culture is dying with a generation of young, black males who can't read.

This is cutting as much as it may be true. Please, help us help them!
