Inquiring Minds Want to Read Non Fiction Part 2

My students need 56 more non fiction book titles to build their background knowledge. These include "Tropical Rainforests," "Desert Food Chains," "Airplanes" and "Classifying Nonflowering Plants."

My Students

Please help our inquiring minds discover more non fiction. Our classroom library needs help in developing a deeper more rich non fiction section.

My students attend a rural Title 1 school in Wyoming.

I have 16 students in my class from varying socioeconomic backgrounds. The majority of the students in my class receive free and reduced lunch. Therefore, many of them have limited resources of their own books at home. They rely on the school and classroom libraries for most of their book reading pleasure. I feel as a classroom teacher that I must do all I can to introduce my students to a variety of topics that will spark their curiosity. My students are excited about reading and are really interested in non-fiction. I know they would be EXTREMELY happy to receive a donation of books!

My Project

Background knowledge, according to research, is a key component in attaining comprehension and one of the best ways to achieve this is through non-fiction books about a variety of topics. I recently went to a reading conference and was told that classroom libraries should be 60% non-fiction and 40% fiction books. I am working to make the shift in my classroom library to more non-fiction books. I will use these books to create learning opportunities for my students that will engage them through real world reading. Most of my students don't have the opportunity to get these types of books on their own, and they absolutely love the opportunity to put non-fiction books into their book boxes at school for reading! I want my students to love reading and I know offering them more non-fiction will help them as it scaffolds their learning!

Donating to this project will enrich the lives of my third grade students.

They need more opportunities to learn about things that they wouldn't otherwise have opportunities for. I know they will be thrilled to have these items in the classroom, and it will help us achieve a more balanced library between fiction and non fiction.
