Independent Worksystems

My students need 2 bookcases to take ownership of their work and learn to complete tasks independently in preparation for future jobs.

My Students

My students attend a high school which has been destroyed by an earthquake. We are attending school three days a week, sharing classrooms with the middle school. Many of our materials have been lost or damaged. We're preparing to move again in February to our modular school.

I have 7 wonderful students in my classroom.

We are a special education class. My youngest student is 14, and the oldest is 21. My students will stay with me until they graduate high school or turn 22. There is never a dull moment in my room, as my students love to sing, dance, and interact with each other, teachers, and visitors to our classroom. They are very funny, cheerful, and caring, and they are always willing to help a fellow student or a teacher. They all want to be able to work and earn their own money one day, so a lot of our instruction is focused on functional skills they will use in the real world, like using money, telling time, and reading.

My Project

These bookcases will provide my students the opportunity to learn to use a worksystem, which is something they may use at a future job in the community. There are many different kinds of worksystems, but in this one, my goal is for each student to have their own shelf. Each shelf will be labeled with numbers 1-5. During individual work time, students will be responsible for going to their shelf, getting the first item, completing it, and putting it on the finished shelf at the bottom. Then they will go get number 2, and continue to use this system until they have completed all their work. This will be a really valuable skill for my students as they begin to transition from school into work environments. Worksystems can be adapted to many different situations, and once students have learned the basics of it they will be able to adapt to using it anywhere. It will be a helpful tool for them when making sure they have accomplished all their assigned tasks at their future job.

Worksystems are an important tool for someone with a disability.

Based on the work my students do, a bookshelf system will work best for them right now. As they learn the basics and begin to work in the community, new worksystems can be created and adapted to their specific situation. It might be a checklist they carry with them at work to make sure they have completed all the steps for a task. Once they have learned to use it, it will be a skill they will continue to use throughout life.
