My students need 9 sets of Cardboard to use with the Google Cardboard App on their personal devices. The Cardboard is essential to the full virtual reality experience.
Each day, my students are using technology to further their education, whether it be through the use of Chromebooks, or completing tasks using their mobile devices, we look for new ways to solve problems daily.
We are excited by the newest technology, and want to experience 360* virtual field trips.
My 30 students are 21st century learners.
They are constantly looking for new ways to apply their knowledge base. Our K-6 school is Title 1 and has over 20% special education students. This amount is due to the specialized programs that are mainstreamed on our campus. We have Gifted and Talented Students and Emotionally Disabled students along with a large number of students who are ELL. Parent involvement is very low due to our location in a bedroom community where most parents commute over 30 miles daily.
Our district is underfunded in comparison to our local competition because of the way our state funds public and charter schools. Our district is made up of 9 schools grades Pre-K through 12 and looses a great number of students to our local charter schools because of the programs the charters can offer since they receive more money from the state. Our class sizes are large. For example, our kindergarten classes have 31 students each with one teacher, and Fifth grade has 36 to 1.
My Project
The Google Cardboard devices will allow students in my classroom to travel to places that they are studying in order to experience the landscape, environment and landmarks for themselves. The vast range of landmarks that are available for students to travel to range from the Grand Canyon to the Great Pyramids all thanks to 360 videos that have been filmed by Google.
These experiences allow for background knowledge of topics they have previously only been able to read about, or see pictures of. Google Cardboard gives the virtual reality experience without expensive devices. The Cardboard, in conjunction with the apps that are installed on a smart phone or recycled device is cost-effective and practical for use in schools.
Due to the increased amount of rigor needed in order to excel with Common Core Standards, real world, first hand experience is needed for students to gain the prior knowledge necessary to relate to higher level concepts.
Google Cardboard allows for that first hand experience through the use of their devices. Students will gain a perspective that previously was only acquired through expensive field trips.
