We are located in a bedroom community in Arizona that has been hit hard by the economic situation. Many of my students went from having 3000+ sq. ft. homes to being renters of investors who scooped up their homes at record low prices. My students have wonderful families and support systems; however, they know that their parents are overworked and underpaid. Most of my parents commute into work in Phoenix for their 9-5 jobs, which means they leave the house at 7:30 and get home between 6:30 and 7:00 in time to bring home dinner and go to bed. Many of my students don't have parents who check their homework, that is not their priority. Our school is a Title One school, with much focus on reading, in the primary levels. The fifth grade is severely lacking in consistency with teacher turn-over and curriculum that is out dated. Our school is home to many different races and ethnic backgrounds, but our majority is Hispanic students.
