Incorporating Writing and Reading into Science

My Students

Have you ever wondered why the moon looks bigger sometimes? Have you ever watched the sun over the course of the year and wondered why it seemed to change its location? Did you ever wonder why your shadow length changes during the year? I want my students to make these connections.

Our high school is a diverse mixture of cultures, races, and economic backgrounds, ranging from abject poverty to comfortable.

Many students receive free or reduced meals at the school. Our district is a largely blue-collar neighborhood where all people pull together for others in times of need.

My Project

Instead of merely telling students about certain phenomena in earth science, they will actually make measurements and document it in a journal. They will reflect upon what they have discovered for themselves. Discovery is so much more effective in helping students understand.

This project is important for several reasons.

The first driving mechanism is that students have a terrible time with earth science concepts although it is all around them. Actively developing these understandings themselves is crucial. Second, our district is of moderate poverty and resources for the students are sometimes limited. Finally, The new Core Curriculum requires reading and writing in science, and having these notebooks will facilitate this effort. Thank you for your help!
