In My Own Words: A Story of My History and My Future

My Students

Have you ever had a life changing experience that you can attribute to giving you a new perspective of the world? Reading and telling their own stories can give my students hope and aspirations to look beyond the 1930s school building, empty library and dangerous neighborhood and set goals for life.

My students are in one of the worst performing schools in the state of PA.

They are also from a poor community whose schools have seemingly been forgotten by progress or change. Many of them have seen school administration and staff changes annually. They need and desire so much, yet they are willing to develop their talents and work hard at what ever is presented to them.

My Project

My desire is to have them read James McBride’s The Color of Water, and August Wilson's The Piano Lesson and compare/contrast their lives the main characters who used their family histories to make decisions and improve their own lives. They will complete a genealogy research project that tells their family histories from the past to the present, and includes their vision of their own futures.

Most of my students are from fragmented families.

If given the opportunity, my students will be able to utilize resources the school, nor district can provide. They will explore their family histories for the first time and use what they learn about oral histories to create a family tree and write a personal story of the inspired future they want for themselves.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
