Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help kids better readers, listeners, and speakers! My students love being read aloud to or following along while we read. With the help of audio books and music, they will learn to speak like native English speakers.

My students are English language learners.

95% are first-generation Americans and all of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our school is located in a densely populated low economic status suburb of a major California city. Regardless of their poverty level or difficulty in navigating academic English, they are motivated to succeed and come to school ready to learn.

My Project

As third graders, my students are expected to read a wide variety of literary genres. Together, we are able to work through many types of text while we are in class. I model proper intonation, fluency, and expression as I read. We practice in our classroom discussions. However, they lack the assistance necessary at home to help them monitor their reading. By having an I Pod for our classroom, I will be able to allow them access to technology that is not always readily available in their home. The students will have the opportunity to listen to audio books in class or at home to continue to expose them to literature. Students will develop their listening skills as they listen, reading skills as they follow along, and speaking skills when we discuss our learning in class.
