Igniting The Love Of Reading

My Students

It makes me sad that I encounter so many kids who are indifferent to reading. In today's world of movies and video games, the fine art and LOVE of reading is lost on so many.

My students are a VERY diverse group of learners.

We are a Title 1 school with a very large ESL population. We have lots of struggling learners and reluctant readers; however, we have a huge gifted population as well who are thirsting for a challenge. The bottom line is that I need a bigger variety of books to reach my students both in terms of reading level and interest level. Cariety is the spice of life!

My Project

Here is my hope! This year, while allowing my kids to select books for their book clubs (several students reading, discussing, and completing projects about the same book), I encountered a lot this: "We love the Narnia books, but we've read the whole series." "These books are too slow." "These books are for girls." "These books don't look interesting." Now, I can tell you that in some cases they were right and in some they were wrong. We did read these books and there were a few pleasant surprises for my students. However, in many cases, the students just weren't "hooked." That made for a lack of interest and a lack of effort in the projects. I am convinced that even the most reluctant reader can fall in love with books if they just read the right one! That is my mission!

I am trying to fill my room with AMAZING, ENGAGING books that make you cry, laugh, and question.

That make my readers think and inspire greatness! I think this selection is a great start, and I am determined to create Hungry Readers, one amazing book at a time!
