Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students today need to realize that if they can find the right author, the right genre, or the right style of a book, they may be able to enjoy reading far more than they ever thought!

My students come from a city of great diversity.

Many of them come from lower economic backgrounds where English is not the first language spoken at home. With this diversity comes the difficulty in finding books that many or most of my students can relate to.

My Project

Having recently bought, with my own money, many books that seemed popular, I found that the students were really eager to read. They are now asking for the sequels to those books, as well as books by the same author because they've had such a positive experience with their current book. The sets of books I am requesting are books by the authors they are currently reading. I am hoping that I will be able to get each student to read two more books, willingly and independently, before the end of the school year. This is in addition to books we will be working on in class.

Students need the opportunity to find a book that speaks to them, so that they can realize that reading can be a positive, enjoyable experience.

Students may find a better understanding of themselves, by beginning to understand others through lessons learned from some of the great young adult novels that are out there. However, the books need to be accessible to my students. Currently, they are not. Your donation can help change this.
