My students need sight word readers along with some alphabet and phonics manipulatives to aid in their guided reading instruction to start the new school year.
What would you do if you were dropped in a foreign country and didn't speak the native language... when you were 5 or 6 years old? That is what my students experience on a daily basis. One of the ways we bridge the language barrier, while still teaching language, is through books and reading.
My students are kindergarten and first grade ELL students learning English as a second language.
They are immigrant and first generation Americans who are eagerly learning to speak, read and write English.
They attend a Title I school and have very little that they can call their own. Their parents are often learning the language themselves and can offer very little support in reading at home. With these manipulatives, I hope to give my students more reading and learning opportunities in the classroom. I am optimistic in hoping to create a ripple effect and my students will then take these skills to aid their parents at home too.
My Project
With these resources, I want to create a more engaging, visual and tactile reading environment for my students. The reading books will provide us with some leveled readers that my students can read during their free reading time. It will target and challenge them at their instructions reading level. The magnetic word parts and word making kits will help to visually and tacitly support my students in making and reading words when they work independently; all of which will help them become more fluent readers.
My project will help change the lives of my students by helping them have a positive and engaging reading experience, in turn, creating life long readers and learners.
I feel this will aid them in supporting their parents quest to learn the English language creating a ripple effect that is unmeasurable.
