My students need an iPad in order to use educational apps to learn content in fun and engaing methods and create multimedia projects on an easily managed mobile device.

My Students

Have you ever had a project in school that when it was assigned, you were so excited to complete it and engrossed throughout the entire process? This is the type of engagement that can be achieved through using an iPad in the classroom.

I teach 4th and 5th grade gifted students in a Title I Georgia public school (which means over 40% of the students are on free and reduced lunch).

The students are very engaged and motivated in learning with technology, however may not always have access to it. While our school district has embraced the bring-your-own-device model allowing students to bring personal devices for learning, many students in our school cannot afford their own. This project would allow my students to have access to the technology they may not see anywhere else.

My Project

With an iPad students can create movies, play games such as Factor Samurai, and read interactive books. Such material is not easily accessible on a traditional computer. Students work much better when things become tangible, which is what an iPad can do to such content when delivered to a child. Apps such as iMovie can allow students to make "movie" trailers on various topics such as the life cycle of a butterfly or the Civil War. iTunes U now provides teachers with a forum to build "classes" where students can access media and content from class in a closed environment.

The iPad is not meant to replace the teacher in the classroom, nor create an entire virtual classroom, but is meant to be a tool teachers can use to teach, just as teachers use pencil and paper.

I plan on using the iPad in my room to enrich my teaching and the curriculum as well as provide opportunities for students to create their own multimedia projects that can be shared with other students in our school, and across the world through the internet.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
