Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science Camp is a luxury for many of my Fifth Grade Students. They have been selling ice cream after school to raise money to reduce the cost of camp and make it more affordable for every child.

My school is a Title I school in California.

Many of our families find paying for Science Camp to be a hardship. We considered not going last year, but through their efforts to sell ice cream after school, we were able to reduce the cost of the camp by about half, making it much more affordable for our families. For most of my students, this is their first time away from home, and their first time camping. Because we live in an urban environment, it is a special treat and an incredible educational opportunity for our kids to be able to spend a few days in nature, learning about science and gaining independence.

My Project

My students need a safe, reliable freezer to store the ice cream they sell after school to raise money for Science Camp Currently we are storing our ice cream in the cafeteria. This has become more difficult because the freezer is often locked when the ice cream is delivered or when we want to sell the ice cream. Alternatively, we have stored the ice cream in our staff room freezer, but it is not secure, and there is often not enough room. Through selling ice cream, and working to earn something that is important to them, my students are learning the value of hard work. They take pride in the fact that they have contributed to the efforts to sell ice cream, which was one of our major fundraisers last year for science camp. Through our fundraising efforts last year, we were able to reduce the price of camp for each child by about half.

This donation will enable my students to continue to sell ice cream in an effort to reduce their cost of attending Science Camp.

If we did not have this fundraising opportunity we would most likely have to cancel Science Camp for next year. In addition to the reduced price of camp, my students are also gaining confidence and real work experiences from selling ice cream and are improving their work ethic by working hard to achieve a goal.
