Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the new standards go into practice in California, my students need access to novels that are grade appropriate and can be used to address standards that require students to compare a book to a movie or some other media version of the story. These books provide that opportunity.

My students attend a small charter school in the Central Coast part of California.

The school charter is based on parent participation and is housed, mostly, in portable classrooms. Parents are very involved in their students' education. When I came to this school 2 years ago, the availability of class sets of books was very limited. Yet, my students perform very high academically. Most read at or above grade level and have very high expectations for their school achievement. The state test scores from Spring of 2011 qualified the school to apply for a California Distinguished School Award.

My Project

I have requested a class set of Shadow Spinner and Across Five Aprils, as well as other novels, that deal with the historical time period that students will be studying while reading these books. These sets will allow students to participate in a "class read", like an adult book club, compare the story to a media version of the story, and support their history studies through the reading of the book. For example, Across Five Aprils is a story about a family during the Civil War. Shadow Spinner is set in ancient Arabia and tells the story of Shaharazad and 1001 Arabian Nights. Integrating students' literature and history supports their learning in both subjects and allows a deeper understanding of their topic.

Having these resources will mean that students don't have to share books, that they can meet the demands of the new standards going into place, and that they will be able to experience history through great literature and vice versa.
