Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I only have ten fingers and I cannot use my toes to figure this problem out. My students need games that come with manipulatives to learn math concepts. Making math concepts concrete and tangible will improve students’ ability to solve math problems.

My students are from an urban community, they are primarily African American and Hispanic, students wear uniforms, and most receive free or reduced lunch.

Students are highly motivated to learning in my basic skills classroom. I will use the materials with my math class, after school (Power Hour) for remedial assistance, and individual tutoring students that have been identified as student on the cusp. Students are curious about how to use math but they need to be able to enjoy learning about math. Students are naturals at playing games and bringing interactive learning to the classroom will engage students in using manipulatives and games to enhance math proficiency.

My Project

Students will use the center activities and games during independent practice, individual tutoring, and after school assistance. The manipulatives will provide students with the opportunity to investigate how to solve problems instead of relying on their fingers. Students will become competent in math after continuous practice using the games and center activities.

It is important for students to have number sense and be able to solve math problems using critical thinking.

Games provide a safe environment for students to actively investigate how to solve math computations and explain how they were able to find the answer. Reflection will promote higher-order thinking skills that can be used to develop math literacy.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
