I Am, That I Am

My students need science materials, like a hands-on discovery lab and a model of the brain, plus microphones with which to speak during our annual public speaking contest and drama performances.

My Students

The purpose of the materials being requested is to assist my students in accomplishing their goals. During public speaking and drama performances, equipment is needed to reach perfection and allow speakers to be heard from afar. My high achievers need to be challenged.

The students at my school are pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.

Our school is located in a low-income area and the students are in need of more challenging experiences than schools in other areas. I have found my students to appreciate challenges given to them, and they are well supported by their parents, teachers, staff, and community. For example, one of my students from grade five went to speak at the University of Memphis, which was remarkable. The students in my HAP (High Achievers' Program) appreciate materials that support them in succeeding. The students in HAP work on subjects in math, reading/language arts, and science and are trained to speak before an audience which improves communication, self-esteem, reading, and language arts skills. Students speak during public speaking events once a year and at drama events three times a year. The student's performances are judged at public speaking events by local educators and awards are given by the school's sponsors.

My Project

Having the necessities to accomplish their goals will improve their performance in whatever activity I introduce. The students will be heard from afar with the cordless microphones I requested. Science experiments with necessary equipment will be performed giving successful knowledge of experiments, and the students' math and reading will improve with the right resources for high achievers' education. What better way to brighten a child's eye than to provide him or her what they need. We need lights for performances done after school. We have students who are gifted artists, whereas they love to draw but they need paint brushes, easels, crayons, pastels, etc. These students wrote poems for two publishers. Their artwork was published twice. The students' creative writing was published through a company for which this school was the only one in the county in that series.

I feel my project is so important because you see it in their eyes when they're constantly asking;"Are we going to do any plays this year?", "When will we start practicing?" They want to do it!

I want them to see their success for the near future to be what they want to be. There are adults that are afraid to stand before an audience whether its speaking or performing in a play.
