Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students need books about hurricane survivors, stories that make them believe the sun WILL come out tomorrow.
Our Middle School is a diverse high-need school comprised of over 1,000 students in grades 6 to 8.
Half of our student population currently receives free or reduced priced lunch. Approximately half of our students receive support services in addition to their core classes. Many of our students are not native English speakers. All of the students have been adversely affected by Hurricane Sandy.
My Project
Hurricane Sandy and the storm surge crippled our small waterfront community. Many have had to live this week with no heat or power, all have had no school and some no longer have homes to return to. The books I have selected are "chicken soup" titles to heal the souls of children who are so focused on the loss of today and need to see the possibilities of tomorrow. Each title tells of how a character lived through a natural disaster. Many reference the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, which many of my students are to young to remember.
Please help my students read about others who survived after being displaced, hurt or otherwise impacted by a hurricane.
They need to be ready to rebuild our community and these books will show them how.
