My Students

Do you remember what it was like to read a book that you couldn't put down? I am eager for my literature students to have that feeling, and I feel that when they are introduced to main characters in the novels that I have chosen, they will find their own love for a good book.

I teach social studies and literature at a high poverty school in rural Alabama.

Although my students are labeled as "high poverty kids", they do extremely well on standardized tests. I credit this achievement to the ideas that their parents and teachers instill in the: "Try hard and eventually good things will come." My students are great kids, and they need your help to fund materials that I and our school and school system cannot afford to supply.

My Project

I have chosen two books that I feel my students will enjoy immensely. The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, is a book about a futuristic place where a young girl, who like my students lives in a poverty-stricken area, finds faith in herself throughout her circumstances. This young girl is accomplished in her skill with a bow and arrow and she uses this skill to keep herself and a friend alive in her country's Hunger Games. I plan to use this novel as an example of the science fiction genre and then teach lessons about life to my students. The other novel that I have chosen, Tuck Everlasting, is about a family that finds and drinks from the fountain of youth. In this novel, a young girl has to decide whether to drink from this fountain or chose to live a full life. I want to use this novel to teach the genres of fiction and fantasy. I also want to students to evaluate the choices they make that could affect their lives in the future.

Please help my students find the joy in reading that so many of them lack.
