Hungry and Hopeful For the Hunger Games!

My students need 30 copies of The Hunger Games to read as an entire class.

My Students

Have you ever read a book that transported you to another world? Have you ever wanted a book to never end? This is the adventure that I want to take my students on through our reading of The Hunger Games. I want this exciting book to change my students' apprehension towards reading.

My 9th grade students attend a large public high school in Chicago.

They are enrolled in this extra reading class to support their struggling literacy skills. Since they find reading to be difficult, many of them openly declare their hatred of books. It is my job to change their opinions about reading over the course of the year and establish them as successful lifelong readers. In order to do this, I teach reading strategies through high-interest fiction, powerful non-fiction texts and graphic novels.

My Project

Throughout the reading of The Hunger Games, students will examine the sacrifices people must make to survive and question whether or not the decisions characters made were morally correct. We will make connections to the texts we read earlier in the year (Our America and Maus) and question the way in which many in society blindly follow and give in to injustice. Students will question the dystopian society of The Hunger Games and also make connections to obvious injustices within our world. Literature helps establish a student's moral compass, and The Hunger Games is an incredibly exciting and thought-provoking text that will encourage students to think about the way that they treat others. Also, students gain an excitement for reading through the teacher's own modeling of the joy of reading and teaching an amazing book

The Hunger Games is an action-packed novel that will help instill a love of reading.

Students will also feel highly motivated to read the book prior to seeing the film, which is being released in March. Students will be able to feel the pride of reading a book while most of their peers have only seen the movie. Our reading of The Hunger Games will stop all of my students from chanting their familiar refrain: "Reading is so boring!" This book will never leave them bored.
