This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember that goldfish on the table at Grandma's house? Goldfish are beautiful, amazing creatures and kids love them! We want to study them! Goldfish have a similar metabolic system to humans and can be affected by temperature. How does temperature affect the respiration rate of a goldfish?
My students are curious and eager to learn.
Our school is located in an impoverished urban environment. Opportunities for extra-curricular activities are limited. We want to provide our students with opportunities to interact with the living world and see for themselves how environmental changes affect a living creature.
My Project
Goldfish are vivid and beautiful. Our students will observe goldfish for several days to see how they behave normally. In order to study our goldfish we need thermometers and stopwatches. The thermometers and holders will allow us to measure the temperature of the water the fish swim in. The stopwatches will help us determine how fast the gills are moving, and then we can infer how fast the goldfish is breathing.
Kids love animals.
Kids care about animals. By tapping into that natural curiosity and interest we can engage their minds and guide them to understand the world around them. How does temperature affect the respiration rate of a goldfish? What do you think?
