How Do You Spell...??? We Need Dictionaries!

My students need 20 copies of Scholastic First Dictionary.

"How do I spell..." I teach second grade in a very low income city in northern California. My students speak English, however they have a very limited vocabulary, due to very little reading at home.

Second grade is a wonderful grade. My students have just learned how to read and love it. However, writing is a different story. Writing is still very new to them, and they always want to raise their hand to ask, "How do I spell..." Because I teach in a low income school, funds are spent on essential books needed for instruction. There is simply no money in the budget for new dictionaries. However, this is a second grade skill. We have a few broken, falling apart dictionaries that the kids love to use, but they are definitely lacking in quality and are at a higher grade level.

The new dictionaries I requested are for grades 2-5, therefore they are appropriate for my children. They have pictures, are in color, and would significantly raise the bar in spelling and writing for my class.

My students are very hard working and deserve all the resources that students in more affluent areas have. I would love to have my students come to school one day soon, and see brand new dictionaries in their desks! They are very independent, however, in this situation they are stuck. Thank you so much for considering this project. If you choose to support it you will be helping my students today, and my students of the future! Thanks again!
