My Students

Please help us hop into more great books and have meaningful reading experiences. We would love to have books to enhance our reading instruction! These books will offer my kids multiple opportunities to practice becoming stronger readers and to develop a love of books and literature.

Located in a very rural community in the South, the majority of my students are on free and reduced lunch.

Because of the rural area and lack of jobs in our town, many children do not have "extras" such as books in their homes; in fact, many of the students have very limited experiences with literature. It is my goal to broaden their literary experiences by buying quality books to supplement specific skill areas in reading.

My Project

I am requesting two groups of books. The first group selected is quality literature that will be used during small-group instruction time. Instead of just sitting at a table and listening to me teach about plot, the books will be used for my kids to create plot charts. Other books requested would be used for my kids to complete character analysis activities. Another lesson I would do when teaching a skill like compare/contrast would be having the kids read complete Venn Diagrams where they are telling how two characters are alike or different. The other group of books selected are to use in a Thanksgiving center. I have many books for fall centers as well as though for other holidays, but I have a very small collection (5 books) about Thanksgiving, and would like to add to this group so that during the holiday times, my kids can read about Thanksgiving and understand why we are celebrating this holiday. The goal of this project is to provide hands-on reading instruction!

This project is important because reading is the most important skill a child can master.

Whether a kid's goal is to become an airline pilot, banker, teacher, doctor, lawyer, fireman, or if they decide they want to pursue a military career or one in law enforcement, every position will require proficient reading skills. The more books available for my kids to pick up and read means the more literary experiences where they will have an opportunity to participate.
