Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For twelve years, I have taught an American History class to at-risk students. We are often without proper textbooks, so the students can not visualize what I am describing. Imagine studying history with no conception of what Abraham Lincoln looked like, or the battlefields of Vietnam.

All of my students are enrolled in a dropout recovery program in Venice, California.

They come from some of the roughest neighborhoods, fragile family situations and lowest-performing schools you can imagine. However, for over a decade, we have had tremendous success with students who are commonly cast-off and forgotten. My kids take this American History class with me for two and a half hours a day, four afternoons a week. It is structured like a college lecture class, with the end goal being to prepare these kids for the challenges they will face in continuing their education at community colleges and universities. Despite their economic and social struggles, my students show up everyday for eight weeks straight and make tremendous progress. Their dedication to education is inspirational, especially given the fact they are ALL recent dropouts, and would quite possibly have been lost to the streets, jails, or a lifetime of menial labor.

My Project

I am asking to be provided with a laptop computer because I believe it will allow me to integrate helpful technology into my lectures. In order to bring the characters of history to life, I would like to prepare a series of PowerPoint slideshows, so my kids can actually SEE the people and places they are learning about. In addition to providing them with this crucial knowledge, I will also be able to use the computer to stream video off the internet, video which is often extremely helpful to further explore questions asked of me in class. If students want to know what it was like to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, I can now quickly access a documentary from Netflix, or a video of a soldier's testimonial on Youtube. This laptop will be an invaluable resource for myself and my kids.

We have, quite literally, no money left for education in Los Angeles.

Those who are most in need, like my students, are currently last in line for help, at lest from the government. We have been making an incredibly important push towards turning the lives of these children around, preventing an incredible waste of human capital from occurring. I sincerely hope you can help me help these deserving students!
