History Books for Kids: Give Them Their Own Story

My students need 25 copies each of "A Lion to Guard Us" and "All Around Virginia: Regions and Resources" to read during our guided reading time.

My Students

Educating and providing support for today's students is a vitally important and challenging part of influencing and mentoring our nation future leaders. Our task at Fort Belvoir Elementary School is even more challenging as our school serves over 1100 students.

Many of our military students and their families are dealing with stress caused by parental deployment (or numerous deployments throughout the past ten years), combat injuries, frequent moves and separation from extended family support.

Also, Fort Belvoir is a unique installation in that all branches of the military are represented on post, but soldiers are assigned here as individuals, rather than with their regular military unit. This can lead to isolation that often seems overwhelming to our students and their families. Since many of our students move frequently and some are new to Virginia, they often have limited background knowledge to support their understanding of Virginia History. We believe these students would benefit greatly from access to additional trade books about Virginia History.

My Project

Unfortunately, our school budget does not provide funding to purchase these helpful trade books so I need a donor to purchase two sets of books to support the 4th Grade Virginia History curriculum. My classroom needs approximately $400.00 to purchase twenty-five copies of the book "A Lion to Guard Us and twenty five copies of the trade book All Around Virginia: Regions and Resources". The trade books would help support my students who are new to Virginia gain a better understanding about Virginia History. With the use of these of books my students will be able to participate in guided reading lessons to improve their reading comprehension of Virginia History. Your donation will also allow my students the opportunity to participate in reading groups and shared what they have learned about Virginia. For example, I will use the book A Lion to Guard Us in reading activities that will help the students learn about the life of the Jamestown colonies.

I need your help with purchasing these books to provide resources that will help close the achievement gap in Virginia History for students who are new to Virginia.

Many of my students experience a high level of mobility and run the risk of not achieving minimum requirements on the Standards of Learning of assessment (SOL) for Virginia History. This a great opportunity to invest in our country's future leaders and support the students and parents who make sacrifices for our country.
